Can you believe in something and at the same time not trust it or trust it blindly. What is the difference between the two words: Believe and Trust. What importance do these words play in our life. Give it a thought and lets see if we can come up with something which is is realistic and applicable to our life.

I think believe is like a hope and trust is the thing about which you are 100% sure or for blind trust you can say overconfident about that that thing will happen only like what you think.for example,we believe that we will get a good placements but we are not blindly trusted on this.Somehow we have fear regarding this.
ReplyDeleteTRUST and BELIEF may appear like synonyms but they are certainly very different from each other. It is only when we try to find the inner deep meaning to it , we will get to know the difference between the two.
ReplyDeleteIf we look at a child , he has no understanding of the world,of god, or of anything around him but still he knows he is safe when he is in his parent's arms. This is called TRUST !!
Trust is something that can be bestowed even with our eyes closed. It is something that comes automatically.
belief is a rather temporary term..
" I believe in you " When a person speaks these words he still has a certain level of doubt in his mind.
belief is made.. trust happens !!
If we believe in someone that doesn't mean that we will trust it too.
And in a world like today its easy to believe on people but building TRUST might take a lifetime.
so friends .. the proverb " believe in everything trust nothing " has a true deeper and appropriate meaning.
"Trust" is the assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something..
ReplyDeleteWhile "believe" is to accept something as true, real or possible.
I see a huge difference between “I believe in a God who cares for me” and “I trust God at this particular moment.”
The first is a bit safer, an article of faith. The latter is unnerving, risky–because I have let go.!
You’ve all heard of the “trust fall.” There’s a reason they don’t call it a “belief fall.” Belief can reside in our heads. Trust is doing it, RISKING it. Trust is humility, putting ourselves in the hand of another.
Trust requires something of us that belief doesn’t.!
So yes, one can believe in something and yet not trust it or trust it blindly.
But when we trust something, we ALWAYS believe in it.
Trust is something that can be easily destroyed or lost.If I trust someone I can easily be betrayed.
ReplyDeleteBelief for me is something you can not change or even if you wish to you are helpless. If I believe someone or something i'll keep on having faith on it regardless of what good or bad comes my way.
Trust is something that comes with belief but also a thing that carries a risk or some uncertainty.
"BELIEVE EVERYTHING TRUST NOTHING" is something that comes evidently. An eagle soaring in the highs is because it believes in itself,on its wings not because it trusts the winds.
So believe in everything and trust nothing.
Believe and Trust are two words which look similar but there is difference between these two words. Trust is more stronger than believe. Trust is assurance but believe is acceptance. There is an element of thorough understanding in trust whereas believe is characterized by the absence of the element of thorough understanding.
ReplyDeleteTrust is something which I do on my parents because I know when I will be in hard times they will be standing behind me to hold me.
My first reaction to “difference between trust and believe” was they are about same but trust is wider in nature. But after more research I found some new aspects to it. Starting with the dictionary meaning of both:
ReplyDeleteBelieve
Accept that (something) is true, especially without proof
Accept the statement of (someone) as true
Hold (something) as an opinion
Trust
1 Firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something
2 Acceptance of the truth of a statement without evidence or investigation
3 Believe in the reliability, truth, or ability of
Trust would actually mean that a person places complete confidence in another person. The person believes that the person he is trusting will do no harm to him
whereas
Believe is a more temporary concept that requires the person to place faith in a person for a select time frame. Believe can also refer to accept that something is true or someone is true.
For me trust is something you do when you act as a consequence of belief. It takes time to build trust but you can start believing in something after a little time only. One may believe in god but cannot have trust for its existance
Ex:
• I trust my friend only after evaluating him on the grounds I find correct.
But I may believe him to be saying correct
• For lending money to one I have trust in, my reaction will be- Sure as I know it will be returned
But I can also lend money to someone by believing that if he is saying that he will return it he will do it.
The phrase “BELIEVE EVERYTHING TRUST NOTHING shows the same that you should start believing but trust only after a long time when you are totally sure about it. There is little pain when your beliefs are shaken but it becomes very difficult for you when someone breaks your trust as it creates a lot of pain
In The context of The above line IT means that we beleive what we see a d sense but trust comes only when we analyse IT.Trust here refers to ensure that The thing is actually what IT seems like.
ReplyDeleteIts 'I trust you' v. 'I believe in you'. What is the difference ? Do both words mean the same ? Does it mean that if we trust we believe, or vice versa ?
ReplyDeleteFor me, trust is considered to be much stronger than believe. When we believe, we accept the truth. But trust is to have complete confidence in something. It is believing in honesty and reliability of a person.
You can believe without trusting but you can never trust without believing.
Trust has an element of faith. It takes words or affirmation to express our belief, but it takes something very important such as our inner soul or our self to express the trust.
Trust is the greater form of believe. I believe everyone but I trust very few people that I can count on my fingers.
"Belief creates things but trust reveals its value." Thus believe and trust are not the same words.
In the words of Antares Altair,
"Believe Everything, Trust No One
Because Everything Is What It Is,
And Nothing Is What It Seems....."
Love the concluding words!!!! Gorgeous work!!
DeleteThankyou.
DeleteWhen we Talk About Belief & Trust, I'll put TRUST one step ahead. Because To have trust is to have confidence in something or someone. Trust shows our confidence for a particular person or thing. But when it comes to belief, it refers to an opinion which may be accepted by someone or may not be. Moreover BELIEF is limited to some extent but TRUST is everlasting.
ReplyDeleteI believe in God, but can I trust God to get me a placement without putting in any effort. Clearly not, until I don't put in the effort myself. But, that does not make me believe less in God.
ReplyDeleteTherefore, belief is what/when/where you apply your thoughts to, but trust is where you put your "money" in or where you would "bank" upon.
Beliefs can be changed or altered, but trust is always earned, broken or breached.
Hence, signifying the strength of the latter with more profound adjectives. So,Trust is specific and belief is generic.
Believe Everything, Trust No One
DeleteBecause Everything Is What It Is,
And Nothing Is What It Seems.
I believe that everything happens for a reason, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself.
Trust everything but believe nothing means that for instance if your friend speaks to you about his salary per annum. If he says that he earns 6 lakhs per annum you will believe it which means you are believing everything that your friend says but you don’t trust him.
A person only trust the true qualities of another person but he never follows the words spoken by his friend to him. Trusting matters more than believing a person, trust once broken will never come back but believing is not like that.
firstly,I must admit that believe and trust are two really confusing terms and the more i read about it the more confusing it became especially the above 13 comments and i concluded that my mates still lurk in confusion but one example that i believed in, that really cleared the air for me, trust me friends(hehe..!) for it might work for you as well.Barack Obama came up with "Yes,we can..!",americans believed in him and gave him his first term but it was when they trusted him was when he was given his second term synonymous to this is we believed in mr.Manmohan singh and the congress we gave them two terms but now since we don't trust them anymore (i hope)we are surely not going uncle sam's way. That sums it all up for me i hope it does for you all as well.i thank ma'am for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteTrust and believe are used interchangeably but they are different from each other.
ReplyDeleteTrust is a permanent concept of exhibiting faith and it prevails for lifetime or till the other person breaks the trust.
Eg:- A person lending money to a friend has trust that the other will return it in given time frame.
Believe is more a temperory concept of exhibiting faith for a given time frame.
Eg:- A person believes that his friend will paas the exam.
Fake might be the world around anyone...What you see is not what is it always...
ReplyDeleteHidden meaning , faces is today world mantra!!!
Keep your eyes open and ears but don't believe in anything.....
People change , Perception change....desires changes..so keep your options open
It will hurt you less when someone back stabbed you...
Believe in God and Parents as they are only two entity that are self-less...
Else every relation might have a meaning associated with it..
" Make your goals attached with an intangible asset not with people ...It will hurt less and keep you more focus "
Manpreet
Belief and trust both comes to existence only if you have faith. To survive in social jungle of life, it is important to have faith, it keeps you motivated and helps to achieve your goals. In order to believe you need to have faith and in order to trust you need to have faith and truly believe in it. To trust you also need quite a lot of courage, courage to risk that is not true, courage to accept that is not just beautiful on the outside but also inside.
ReplyDeleteEmotionally, trust is stronger than belief as trust in reflected in actions we take and belief is reflected in opinions we form. Trusting someone or something exposes us to risks while forming a belief is similar to accepting the unknown truth or false statement as a true statement. So, we can trust everything safely, but trusting on someone/something needs risk taking capabilities.
I think trust is more of a personal feeling and belief is more based on some known facts. Belief can be generated in anyone by the environment he or she is living in but trust comes with no reason and it is more like one way love. Trust is something which cannot be developed so easily, it can only be developed if you are having strong belief in something.
ReplyDeleteLet me start by clearing some mist off and putting the above stated line in Hindi: Mann sb kuch lo, vishvas kuch bhi nai kro..
ReplyDeleteWell friends, the statement germinates from the mere fact that the world today has grown so mean and selfish that the fact you can trust and hence believe anybody is a rare commodity to find. There is one unique aspect about believing I would like to put forward. Friends, in the world we are heading towards, corporate sector, its believing that leads to winning the bread. If you believe in your product, consumer would too and hence you sell.
Trust is a precursor to believing. The famous book "I am OK, You're Ok", concretes the fact that if you believe in something you will let other's believe it to.
When a person trust someone than it means he also believes him but vice versa is not true.
ReplyDeletePerson can believe a thing even if he has a little amount of doubt about it but he will not trust it.
Beliefs are all about our outlook towards life. According to our perceptions and experiences, in many things we believe a lot while in others we don't. Our beliefs can be considered as an indicator of the level of optimism we have, and our ways to handle the things and situations In hand. Believing is to have faith and hope for the best to happen.
ReplyDeleteThus, believing always gives us a path to move on. But, even then one cannot be sure until TRUST plays its part. Trust can be considered as a next level of believing. Trust starts its life when Beliefs grow to fullest.
But there might be situations when belief and trust play completely different roles. For example: one may believe in the existence of God but one cannot blindly jump off a cliff with a trust on God who would come to save him.
Quite funny but the above example clearly differentiates between the two terms.
Thus, I would say that belief and trust both reflect your faith and hope but trust is what takes its own time to blossom, but once shattered, it is really difficult to be regained.
Believe and trust are similar words with varying degrees of conviction. Trust is more deep a word used with a higher degree of conviction.
ReplyDeleteAccording to me, the usage of these words comes naturally to an individual. Trust is generally used when we are involved in the equation whereas
believe is used where we are not the involved subject.
A simple example would be that I believe that the daredevil can perform that death defying stunt successfully but will i volunteer for it?
No i would not, simply because i do not TRUST the person enough to risk my life.
So, there is a thin line which demarcates the two terms 'Believe' and 'trust'.
As my friends have already explained in the comments above, trust is a higher degree of belief.
ReplyDeleteHitesh gave a very appropriate example which made the difference between the two clearer for me. We believe that the tight rope walker can perform the stunt but we will not risk our lives as we cannot trust him with our lives.
A bank believes you can repay the loan and will start the procedure for giving you a loan but will give you the loan only when they trust you,i.e.,when they check your financial position, property, stability etc. and only then approve your loan.
We can believe in something as it will not affect us alot but we will trust something only when we are sure about it because it will affect us directly.
Trust and believe have deeper meanings when it comes to using it in relationships. The term trust is considered to be a much stronger than believe. Trust would actually mean that a person places complete confidence in another person. The person believes that the person he is trusting will do no harm to him.
ReplyDeleteBelieve is a more temporary concept that requires the person to place faith in a person for a select time frame. Believe can also refer to accept that something is true or someone is true. Believe is the feeling that would require a person to accept that a person is a good person that tells the truth. Believe is a feeling that allows a person to have faith in someone or something. For example: a person believes that he/she can pass an upcoming exam. This is having faith that the person will be able to pass the exam. However, there is a slight chance that the person can fail the exam. The term ‘believe’ consists of accepting an idea or a suggestion. Believes may also change depending on the circumstances, hence it is considered as a temporary concept. Using the above example, the person may believe that they are able to pass the exam, but what about the other exam after that.
Trust and belief look alike but both have different meaning.
ReplyDeleteBelief is Understanding something to be true, or most likely to be true with no real evidence for it, but still using logic and reason.
Example: I have a 'belief' in my personal philosophy of the universe and reality. I don't claim it to be correct, but from my understanding of physics, I can come to that conclusion based on logic and reason.
And Trust is When someone else tells you something and you accept it as truth simply because you feel comfortable enough with the person.
I am really happy with the response all of you have given. Your comments show a clarity of thought as individuals, which is a great asset. So good work everyone !!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the motivation ma'am.
DeleteGreat Example!! Appreciate that you shared it here.
ReplyDeleteI think believe is powerful word.If this line is used for dreams then believing makes a lot of difference. Infact, it decides where one will go in life but at the same time trust has to be there. If I spend hundreds of hours preparing for something and still don't trust myself that I can deliver when the times comes, then all those hundreds of hours of hardwork are total waste.
ReplyDeleteI think beleive is more of a casual word.Beleif in something can be because of somebody else's expereince also. For Eg somebody tells you about he got cured by a doctor and further beleiving this you may suggest the same doctor to somebody suffering from the same disease. But TRUST is an expensive and Dangerous thing to invest.Beleif can be changed from time to time but Trust once shooken may get you handicapped to trust again. So Beleive everything but Trust nothing. Thanks
ReplyDeleteIt says, Believe everything trust nothing. Belief and trust goes hand in hand with each other. Belief can be considered as an emotional attraction of a person towards an event, another person, a thing, etc. from which he/she expects a positive outcome. Trust, on similar lines, comes into picture when the believes give same positive response, as expected by a person, for some threshold value. It means that when certain believes give expected positive responses, trust is developed over that person or event. Let me support this notion with an example:
ReplyDeleteSay, a child takes birth. As per teachings from family and teachers, that child comes to know that there is GOD who controls us and is responsible for everything happens to us. Now, a belief is developed within that child that GOD is supreme power and HE does all good and bad to a person. Now, its obvious that if child is having belief in GOD, he will definitely expect from HIM. Once his belief is set up, the turn of trust and dis-trust comes into picture. If his wishes turns out to be favorable, trust gets build up. But, if his wishes are not fulfilled (due to any reason), he will generate within himself a feeling of distrust (over GOD).
So, what actually happens is the belief gets converted to one's trust and dis-trust, depending upon fulfillment of wishes. Moreover, Belief and Trust can be experienced even among people on various grounds.

ReplyDeleteFor many the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear the words trust and believe is that they are synonyms of each other i.e they have the same meaning. But according to me they are 2 very different words.
ReplyDeleteTrust is when you have a complete 100% faith in someone or something. For example you trust your best friend that in hard times your friend will help you no matter what situation you are caught up in.
On the other hand believing in someone is completely different. It is your belief that you hold to yourself for example you believe in GOD, you believe that someone is your friend etc. But what you believe in might not be true. Maybe you believed someone as your friend but he did not considered you as one. Thus showing that believing is a belief that you hold inside you regarding anything, it might be true or it might not be true.
Since our childhood we are made to believe in GOD but do we actually trust him? In our college life we trust only a handful people who are your best friends with our lives but we believe that we have a numerous friends. Can you trust those people with your life? I think no body can because no one has a 100% surety that when you are stuck somewhere in life they would help you. Thus proving my point that believing and trusting are 2 very different things and one should be able to carefully differentiate between the two.
Believe is a synonym of trust but trust is not a synonym of belief. I have a motto in life that i follow, "believe in everything but trust nothing", which is our topic of discussion here.

ReplyDeleteOne day i guess it was when i was in 10th standard my elder brother came up to me and said, "Believe in everything and trust nothing", and i was like why are you saying this, aren't believe and trust the same thing. And he replied, "with time you will know the difference and then remember what i said and abide by this rule for the rest for your life".
ReplyDeleteAnd today with the little world that i have seen around me, i can say that my brother was right.
Trusting is totally different than believing. When you trust someone you have your complete faith in that person and everyone has only a few number of people in their lives whom they can trust blindly. Be it their family members or their best friends. But one can believe in someone whom they don't even know personally, like i believe that Sachin Tendulkar is the best batsman in the game of cricket. But my belief in him may or may not be true because it is my personal opinion. And every individual have different believes is his or her lives. Like i believe in GOD but some people don't believe in him. Its their own personal believes.
In today's world i think the saying that "believe in everything and trust nothing" is truly justified because trust me the world is not what is used to be back in the days. Human has become a very selfish creature. And trusting someone selfish is not what someone should do.
And thus in the end i would like to say that be aware of your surroundings, beware of whom you trust with your lives. Man learns by the mistakes he has made in his life but more quickly you learn better will be the things for you. My brother taught me this lesson long back and since then i have been following it. And at present i can say that i only trust only a hand full of people and till now i have not made a mistake in trusting them because time and time over again they have proved that my trust in them is truly justified.
I think that believing in something and trusting something are two different things. We often believe in what we hear but how often do we trust it?? It is true that belief and trust are interrelated but they are not same. Believing is like an action, it's like you believe in someone or something while Trusting is like you trust a person, and this person doesn't lie, cheat, and always true. Like if my friend says that Katrina Kaif visited his place, I can believe him for a moment because he is my friend but how can I trust him without any proof because friends also play pranks at times. Trust needs time to build. Trust and belief together is same only in the case of God. We believe in him and trust that he is always there.
ReplyDelete"Believe Everything Trust Nothing".. This quote can be better explain by the example like- I believe that everything happens for a reason but at the same time I can't trust on what actually happened... So we can say that believe is a tool to accept things in the manner they happen but trust is the choice that you make in the end. Also belief can be influenced but trust cannot, trust is build with time and after various observations whereas the belief is just a sway of emotions and can be influenced.
ReplyDeleteBELIEVE AND TRUST to me are two very different words. Let me try to explain why i feel so. Trust is something which can take a very long time to develop and it is not something you do thoughtfully. You either trust someone or you don't whereas believe relates more to a particular situation, say a friend stating a story, now you may believe him or you may not but that doesn't change whether you trust him or not. So trust is more of an intimate word and incorporates human emotions much strongly.
ReplyDeleteBelieve is to know that the other person is right and you actually 'believe' what the other is saying.
ReplyDeleteFor e.g I believe what you are saying.
Trust is to know that, that the other person will do what he's been told to do.
For e.g. I trust you completely and i know you will keep my stuff safe' Believe and Trust both are related.......
If you don't trust you can't believe .....
If you don't believe......... it is difficult to accept
If you decide no to believe ........ there is nothing in this world you can accept
Trust is relatively strong word and feeling It is applicable to a few things or person. We cab believe in something but might not trust but if we trust something we are bound to believe in it
ReplyDeleteTrust might belief in its perifery. I might love to believe someone with a trust factor but its not sure shot way to prove the argument
Trust is the Foundation of All Cooperative Relationships and belief is the mental attitude that some proposition is true.
ReplyDeleteIn my view, both believe and trust are very important words and impact our life to a great extend.
As beliefs are important because behavior is important and our behavior depends on our beliefs. Everything we do can be traced back to beliefs we hold about the world. It can be said that everything such as from brushing your teeth to your career.
Beliefs also help determine how we react to others' behavior it can be understood by an example as your own career choices. All this means that beliefs are not an entirely private matter. Even beliefs we try to keep to ourself may influence our actions enough to become a matter of legitimate concern of others. The more important those beliefs are, the more important it is that they be open to examination, questioning, and challenges.
On the other hand, trust can be seen as the absence of fear at a minimal level like it’s knowing that you won’t intentionally hurt the other person. And at a higher level, it’s a reliance like you will be there for the person when they need you, you won’t sacrifice the person for your self interest etc. Thus Trust has a major impact on a person’s well-being and their self image. Without trust, relationships fail but it is very difficult to build ans sustain this trust.
So personally I agree and follow the line quoted by Edgar Allan Poe
“Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear.”
